English Only: Saved by the Bell

We know the tale of the tape on the new "English First" bill. What drew my interest was the story in the Tennessean indicating Councilman and Mayoral candidate David Briley was absent.

It seems to be a bit more interesting than the lone word "absent" can imply. I have heard tell that Briley was indeed present at the meeting both before and after the vote on the English First measure. From what I hear Briley is telling people that he had to step out into the hall to take a call from a family member.

Saved by the bell ...

I don't see how he is really saved by the bell, because Briley has already voted against this bill on the second reading. Had he voted against it on the third reading, it wouldn't have made a difference.

What happened, according to Michael Cass, is that Briley was talking with his mother to make sure his son was picked up, because Briley's wife was at work. He's got a young son, so it makes sense that he would be more concerned with him than a symbolic vote.

wasn't that vote at 9:00 p.m. at night? So what was Briley's three year old doing up at that time?
why was Briley just then worrying about it? I don't think db is that poor a parent, but using kid for an excuse does show his character.

Wow, Nashville is so lacking in substantive issues that you have to create one out of a man --- who has stated his view on this bill in no uncertain terms anytime he was asked --- having to take a child-care phone call while a vote came a half-hour early. Really?

Do any of you HAVE children? Are UFOs real? Tune in...
